To 2019….May it be better than 2018
I feel like I say this every year, that the year has gone by so fast. It’s almost as if 2018 didn’t even happen though if you were to accumulate all the stories there would be too many to tell. I’m sure you are the same way. Where has the time gone? There are so many things to do and so little time to do it in. Like clockwork you will see everyone talk about their new years eve goals. Did you have goals? Did you follow them? Do you think new years goals are a waste of time? I don’t think so. Let me explain!
In every digital instrument we use there is an off button, a restart button, a do over. So why can’t we have a do over year, A restart year, an off year. Was 2018 your off year? Well it was for me. I had so many plans, so many ideas, and yet many of them did not come to pass. I had a few outstanding moments but I do not want to talk about those. I want to talk about why my year was an off year, and maybe why you had an off year.
Let 2019 be a restart to you, your life and everything about life. Lets see why things did not go so well for me in 2018.
I failed to write down any plans. I had goals. Very vague goals. None of them had finish dates, things due, when and where, the what and how. It was just I would like to do …. Those were not goals, those were just half baked ideas that I thought would be a good thing to do. If you want to succeed in 2019, you MUST have set goals. Sit down, write down what you would like to accomplish and set yourself some time constraints to get it done.
I was Inconsistent. Isn’t the reason why we still have a job is because we get up day after day at a certain time, we drive a certain way, we do work a certain way and so forth. All of those things have something in common. CONSISTENCY. If you want 2019 to be a success, you must be consistent with the goals you have set.
I shot low and made it. The worst thing I did was that I didn’t dream big. I was thinking with my cup half empty. I did not see myself able to achieve my goals so I did not set them high. I set low and hit low. I’ve heard the quote before but I never paid any attention to it. Michelangelo said “The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark” So….In 2019, don’t aim low and hit, aim high and hit and if you miss who cares, at least you tried.
I was happy with Status Quo. We tend to do this in our lives. We get to a certain point and we are complacent. We are ok with the way things are going for us. I travel, I see things, I hang out, I have friends. My life is pretty standard awesome, yet at the end of the year I always think I could have done more, been better, improved just a little more. Don’t be complacent this year, always try to improve yourself. Think big, go big.
I kept the wrong company. If you want to make it you better surround yourself with people who think like you. If you want to start a business this year, hang out with people who have started their own business’. If you want to quit your job and work for yourself, hang out with people who have done so. The inspiration will drive you forward and get you in your jive.
I’m okay at everything. One of things that many people do is that they are jack of all trades. They do lots of things but none of them are done extraordinarily well. They are just done because we know how to do them. If you want 2019 to be your year, you must find that trade you are good at and perfect it. One question I have always asked of potential employees was what are you good/better at than everyone else you know. Think about that question and try to answer it. What are better at than everyone else?
I failed to act. If you are reading this, that is because you want a change in your life. It seems like we all know what we need to be successful but we fail to act. Stop failing to act and get yourself together. The only thing separating you and I from the pack is acting on our ambitions. Do you want to make it? Than stop saying and go do!
